Recruit Barack Obama as a fan

Thibodeau plotting to convert Obama from Bulls to Knicks fan originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Say what you will about Tom Thibodeau: The man has ambition.

High on his list of priorities as the new head coach of the Knicks? Recruiting Barack Obama, a renowned Bulls fan, to support New York.

“Obviously, [Barack Obama] was a great president, and a big Bulls fan,” Thibodeau said in a recent teleconference with reporters. “So, I’ve always enjoyed him and thought he did a great job as a president. And we’re gonna have to work on making him a Knicks fan.

“But [Obama] loves the game. I think all our players in the league have great respect for him. So we’re gonna work on getting him to shift from being a Bulls fan to being a Knicks fan.”

Thibodeau, of course, coached the Bulls from 2010-2015, where he saw Obama’s fandom up close. The former United States president (and, more importantly, former Chicago resident) has made numerous courtside appearances at the United Center and consistently and publicly supported the team — even if his Joakim Noah takes have aged poorly with time.

In fact, he famously rushed to Thibodeau’s defense after his firing from the Bulls in 2015:

.@apat246 @chicagobulls love thibs and think he did a great job. Sorry to see him go but expect he will be snatched up soon by another team.

— President Obama (@POTUS44) May 28, 2015

Will the mutual respect he and Thibodeau share lead to him breaking with his longtime favorite team? The jury is out. But Thibs certainly appears to be up to something.
