NBA announces virtual and on-court workouts for Draft Combine originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
The NBA is moving forward with the 2020 Draft Combine after a long-standing hiatus for several prospects looking to enter the association.
This season, due to limitations and health considerations, the combine will be conducted both within team markets and virtually from September 28 through mid-November.
Typically, the scouting event is held at a single location with representatives and scouts able to see projected draftees go through a series of measurements, drills and scrimmages. Unique circumstances because of the coronavirus pandemic pushed back the event and forced the league to reimagine the best manner for teams to evaluate prospects.
Unlike previous seasons, prospects taking part in the combine will be filming a “Pro Day”-style video as detailed by the league. It can last up to 45 minutes and only feature the player along with a coach and/or trainer. Players will be allowed to take part in an on-court program with strength and agility testing, anthropometric measurements and shooting drills to go along with the video. This video and program will take place in the closest NBA team facility to the prospects’ home or current residence sometime during the month of October.

There will be medical testing and examinations by NBA physicians. It was not revealed whether the home teams will be able to view the program in-person.
Prospects will be able to opt-out of the 2020 Draft Combine as reported by ESPN’s Jonathan Givony and submit other videos for evaluation. At the onset of the pandemic, the league shut down in-person interviews and workouts. Now, the NBA is permitting teams to watch further workout videos of a draft-eligible prospect outside of the “Pro Day” recording.
Teams will also be able to reach out to prospects for official interviews via videoconference from Sept. 28 through Oct. 16.
The NBA Draft remains on schedule for November 18 but is subject to change as needed.
