Updated scenarios for which team Celtics will play in first round of NBA playoffs

The Boston Celtics know they will play one of two teams in the first round of the 2020 NBA Playoffs, but the C’s must wait a little longer before the matchup is officially determined.

The Celtics are locked into the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference, so they’ll play the No. 6 seed in Round 1. The Indiana Pacers and Philadelphia 76ers are the only two teams that can finish sixth, so one of them will be Boston’s first round opponent.

Don’t miss NBC Sports Boston’s coverage of Celtics-Wizards, which begins Thursday at 11 a.m. with Celtics Pregame Live followed by tip-off at noon. You can also stream the game on the MyTeams App.

How/when will we know which team is going to face the C’s? Sean Grande of 98.5 The Sports Hub broke down the scenarios in the following tweet:

Skeleton-crew Sixers lose to the Suns.

Two games left.

The Celtics cannot play Miami. If the Pacers lose their last two and the Sixers win their last two, Indy is #6.

Any other combination…it’s Celtics-Sixers.

4. Miami 44-275. Indiana 43-286. Phily 42-29

Here’s a look at the remaining schedules for the Sixers and Pacers.

PACERSWednesday, Aug. 12 at 4 p.m. ET vs. Houston RocketsFriday, Aug. 14 at 4 p.m. ET vs. Miami Heat

76ERSWednesday, Aug. 12 at 6:30 p.m. ET vs. Toronto RaptorsFriday, Aug. 14 at 9 p.m. ET vs. Houston Rockets

The ideal first round opponent for the Celtics would be the Sixers. Philly’s superstar point guard Ben Simmons recently left the bubble to undergo knee surgery, and he’s reportedly expected to miss the rest of the 2019-20 season. Simmons is an All-Star caliber player, and his absence is a huge blow for the 76ers at both ends of the floor. The Sixers still have a talented roster without Simmons, but it’s hard to envision them beating the Celtics in a seven-game series with the veteran guard sidelined.

The Pacers have played surprisingly well in the bubble with a 4-2 record through six games. Indiana forward T.J. Warren has been one of the breakout stars of the league’s restart, averaging 31 points per game.

The Celtics will wrap up their seeding game schedule Thursday against the Washington Wizards at noon.
